Jim was a green narrow-gauge tank engine, with a gold dome.
Jim worked on the Mid Sodor Railway with Duke and many other engines. He was bought somewhere around the 1920's to handle the goods services who causes accidents without meaning to. Then after an accident involving a traction engine. At first he was convinced that his was 'jinxed', but an unfortunate accident proved to be his saviour, as he was repaired and sent away to continue working elsewhere. The Mid Sodor manager decided to send Jim to a sand quarry railway in England. He was sold around 1927. After quite a few adventures on other railways (in other countries!) he managed to find his way back to Sodor, where he lives and works happily and safely. It's unknown what happen to him after the Mid Sodor Railway closed.
Jim never appeared in any stories, but appeared on the Reverend W. Awdry's model layouts of the Mid Sodor.
Jim's basis was a Gem Vari-kit; freelance, but modified to look like a Kerr Stuart Skylark locomotive.
